As usual, we don't really publish videos for RUclips per-se, but rather simply embed them in the appropriate place on our website. This is just a demonstration of the optional extra for the Forge Direct Custom Katana. Note the prominent emperor nodes on the front side, the seam hidden under the ito area, and the overall shape and ergonomic appearance. Music: www.bensound.com

On location in Phnom Penh, Cambodia with the premier manufacturer of Japanese swords, Citadel Knives and Swords. Monotempered vs Traditional Katana
Просмотров 13 тыс.6 лет назад
Some heavy testing by Jason Woodard on two Katana - one,a 1060 monotempered blade and the other, a 5160 differentially hardened blade. Usually 5160 is a stronger steel than 1060, but only when monotempered. When differentially hardened, it fails on a steel pole where the monotempered 1060 blade comes away relatively unscathed. But all swords meet their end at the granite block of doom. We destr...
Musashi Fastcutter Testing
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.6 лет назад
A couple of preliminary tests for my own design, the Bamboo Fast Cutter Katana by Musashi. I had no idea just how tough and thick the bamboo was that I was cutting until after I had cut through it - with barely a central hollow channel, it was more akin to cutting a wooden broom handle than bamboo. But it cut it all the same - with zero edge damage. Full review to be uploaded to Sword Buyers Gu...
Sword Making in the Philippines by Blade Culture International

The good people at Blade Culture International, Pozzorubio, Pangasinan in the Philippines were kind enough to show us how they make their world famous blades.. They start with a billet of 5160 Spring Steel and, using bamboo handled tools on a WWII era artillery shell for an anvil, score the steel down the middle, rapidly cool it and split it into two pieces. Each piece is then hammered and forg...

    I'm a sword noob but know a thing or three about knives, and China is producing some great quality knives for the money and deserves respect. It's the scammers who lie and misrepresent cheaply made garbage as the real thing to the ignorant that are giving all of China and their rich bladecrafting tradition a bad name. And, using a power hammer is in no way cheating or creater a lesser blade if the materials, heat treatment and craftsmanship are all still there.

    Ok. Let's cut trough the inaccuracies. There is no "mono-tempered" anything. To temper is to reheat a hardened blade after quenching, to allow the steel to lose some hardness and gain back huge amounts of toughness. When you first quench a piece of high carbon steel, it becomes very hard, and also very rigid and brittle (really, really brittle. Surprisingly so ) So you have toi temper it by reheating it to 250-350°c for a while So, it's uniform heat treat vs differential quench (or differential heat treat if you want because quenching is part of the heat treatment process) . Differentially (or selectively ) heat treated blades have one of their part (generally the spine) covered in clay to protect this part from contacting with water during the quench, hence greatly reducing the cooling down effect of water, hence preventing this part to reach high hardness it's an effort to reduce brittleness of the blade , because their edge are very hard. The other blade is not "mono tempered" , it's simply uniformly quenched and that's it.

    My advice to beginner sword buyers: If you have little money then buy a 1045 carbon steel sword for 100€. Some of them have real hamon. If you want a middle quality sword then choose a 1065 carbon steel sword for 150€. If you want a good quality battle ready sword then choose a T-10 tool steel sword for 250-300€. If you want a high quality T-10 tool steel sword then choose Huawei for 500-600€. If you want a completely handmade monosteel katana (not Chinese replica) then buy from swordsmiths in Hungary. Their completely handforged katanas cost around 1300€

    It's insulting that some of the swords haven't been forged, but cut from steel sheet and polished into the shape of the sword. Nontheless, they've made it cheap so we can buy it worldwide.

    • @MacTX
      @MacTX 11 месяцев назад

      It's insulting only for people who are Japanese or are traditionalist. With modern steel production, it's not really necessary to forge these swords the traditional way. The steel sheets can be formulated to exactly the composition needed. Much more cost effective, especially with the help of modern machinery.

      Warriors in the 1600s would love the steel quality we are able to provide today from sheets.
